Birds of Prey show at Sanson Estate Winery

Birds of Prey show at Sanson Estate Winery

If you’ve never been to a Sanson Estate Winery open house then you are definitely missing out.  Along with free food (the owner is a professional chef) and complimentary wine sampling, there are family-friendly activities included so you can bring everyone out.  Last year was the first year that a birds of prey show was added; it was amazing to see all of these majestic birds up close.

Try Sanson’s all-natural beef burgers and hot dogs before you buy.  Other tasty treats will be available as well.  Don’t forget to stock up on some of your local favourites in the retail store.

See you there!

Saturday, June 19th marks our 5th summer celebration. This event is held in cooperation with Essex County Stewardship Network. Please join us from 12pm to 4pm under the tent as we welcome the season and some special guests.

Our resident nature expert Dr. Dan Loncke will offer a rare opportunity to visit some of the winery’s 38 acres of protected land. Dr. Dan, a retired veterinarian and avid birder, will share his knowledge about our unique habitat and the different animal species that have made the farm their home.

At 2:30pm the Canadian Raptor Conservancy will feature a Birds of Prey flying display. See hawks, owls, and falcons up close.

Enjoy the outdoors, complimentary BBQ, and sample our newly released award winning wines. The 2008 Baco Noir Reserve will be joined by a limited release of our 2007 Syrah and our all new Autumn Harvest Vidal which is sporting a brand new bottle and cap!

This event is for the whole family. Rain or Shine.

Farmers’ Markets Full Steam Ahead

June 17th, 2010

The grand opening of the Downtown Windsor Farmers’ Market was spectacular!  The crowds kept coming and many vendors sold out long before the day was over.  Along with all of the great food, there were some demonstrations, master gardeners on hand to answer questions and native plants for sale.  There were over 30 vendors with fresh, local produce, baked goods and prepared foods, area artisans and entrepreneurs, and live entertainment.  New additions this year included meat, fish, gluten-free baked goods, pony rides and unique entrepreneurs.  Every Saturday until October 30th from 8am to 1pm.

Last weekend the Amherstburg Farmers Market opened with several vendors (and great weather).  Every Saturday until October 30th from 8:30am to 3:30pm.

On June 5 & 6, representatives from the Downtown Windsor Farmers’ Market were at Colio Winery for Sip Into Summer.  The mini market included The Thibert Farm, Faerhaven Soaps, The Fruit Wagon and a fourth vendor selling his plants and greenhouse veggies.  The free samples went over very well. :)

Jam Packed Weekend

June 4th, 2010

There are loads of family-friendly events going on this weekend and many are related to local food.

  • Art in the Park (4th-6th) – local wine tent; ticket prices vary by event/entertainment
  • Amherstburg Farmers Market (5th) – farm produce, plants, preserves and more
  • Sip Into Summer (5th-6th) – local wineries celebrate summer with this year’s theme “Support Local”; $5/person

I’m volunteering for the Downtown Windsor Farmers’ Market (opens June 12) so we will be at Colio Winery this Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 4 with some of our vendors.  Stop by to try and buy and pick up some information on the market.  I’m working the Saturday shift if you want to say hello!

Check out our Food Events page for a complete list of upcoming local food events.
