Strawberry Overload (Is there such a thing?)

May 27th, 2010

Get ready for more strawberries than you can handle!

  • June 4-6 is Lasalle’s Strawberry Festival.  They don’t use local berries so maybe we should all push for that!
  • The Downtown Windsor Farmers’ Market opens June 12th with fresh produce including strawberries (visit early for the best selection).
  • Trusty Food to You / Tredki Acres in Amherstburg now has chemical-free strawberries available.  Get the berries delivered or visit the farm for pre-picked and pick-your-own starting this Saturday, May 29th.

If you are buying lots of berries to freeze, wash them and de-stem them and place them on waxed paper in the freezer (on a tray or baking sheet).  Once frozen, put the berries into freezer bags; this prevents your fruit from sticking together.

Change Camp Food-Related Information

May 24th, 2010

As promised, here are our notes from the “Food” group at the recent Change Camp.

Our session had 3 main topics:

  1. Establishing a Regional Food Policy
  2. Promoting “Go Local”
  3. Building Awareness of Farm + Food + Tourism

Here were our discussion notes:

  • Food summit on October 18th hosted by WindsorEats
    • Food policy and food security
    • May work with Pathway to Potential – less duplication, bring like-minded together, network
  • Progress of culinary tourism (private versus public) – need to set realistic timelines
  • There are food deserts even in Windsor; need solutions like community gardens, etc.
  • Local food delivery programs will help tourism (promoting local food), restaurants, residents, etc.
  • Everyone’s definition of “local” may vary; should we define it?
  • Combine organic food and culinary expertise to make new, exciting dishes
  • Grow ethno-cultural vegetables here; what can grow here?
  • Can we create a grass roots program to make change?
  • We need to promote education: in schools and to the general public; some food programs have started
  • If you believe in something, pick and even and commit to it; try to do this once a week
  • Create win-win situations for farmers/wineries and organizers of events

Full notes and photos from the event can be found at the ChangeCamp Windsor Wiki.

Kari and I didn’t get to try the fritters though as they were eaten up so fast! Word was they were yummy!

The berries are the perfect balance of sweet and tart and were marvelous with vanilla ice cream!
