Wagner Orchards & Winery

October 11th, 2007

We spent Saturday afternoon at Wagner Orchards & Winery in Maidstone. It was a great day for apple picking and apparently a lot of others thought so too. We picked 20 lbs of Empire and Mutsu apples (for baking and canning) for $12.00 and bought three scrumptious strudels at the bakery.

Local potatoes (Kingsville) were also available so we added a bag of those too.

The orchard also sells fruit wines, pumpkins and more. You can bring your family for a hay ride, pet the horses, watch the birds swim in the pond and walk around the friendly farm. Don’t forget your dog!

I’ll add some pictures soon!

Enjoy Thanksgiving and All Its Bounty

October 5th, 2007

We are very lucky that we live in an area that produces fresh produce for most of the year. Personally, fall is my favourite time of year and I love to get out to local farms to pick fruits and vegetables. Right now, did you know that you can get:

  • Late harvest raspberries
  • Apples
  • Pumpkins

The weather is supposed to be great this weekend too, so why not plan a family outing?

Local orchards include:

Giving thanks shouldn’t be about stuffing ourselves with turkey, it should be about appreciating what you have in your life and being able to put food on the table.

Food for Thought – Recommended Reading

October 3rd, 2007

I am currently reading Barbara Kingsolver’s interesting book “Animal, Vegetable, Miracle”. Barbara’s family spent a year eating only local food that they purchased or grew. This included all cooking and baking ingredients, meats, vegetables, nuts and grains, etc.

I heard Barbara speaking about her book on an NPR interview so I checked it out from the library. I’m happily surprised that besides documenting their 1-year commitment, they discuss nutrition in general and have lots of articles about food misconceptions.

Definitely worth checking out.

The Windsor Library has 2 copies available.

Buy Local!

October 3rd, 2007

There are so many reasons to buy local food.

Check out my site at www.victoriasportfolio.com for a detailed list of reasons but here are just a few:

  • Help the environment – local food doesn’t travel a highway to get here
  • Support your community – your purchase returns money to the local farmer and the local seller
  • Eat healthy – Buying fresh food means no preservatives, added fats, etc.
